Lecture: Three Talks on the Culture of Cuba

A special program highlighting three UM faculty and their work to illuminate the rich cultural heritage of Cuba and what it tells us about the world today. Following the presentations Gregory Shepherd, dean of the UM School of Communication, will moderate a Q & A.

Speakers include:
Michelle Gonzalez Maldonado, professor of Religious Studies, College of Arts & Sciences, will present why and how La Caridad del Cobre is a symbol of Cuba’s identity, and the complexity and resilience of its religious traditions in her talk, “Masking the Virgin Mary: La Caridad del Cobre and Religion’s Resiliency in Cuba.”

Gonzalo Rubalcaba, lecturer of Studio Music and Jazz, Frost School of Music, will combine performance and reflection to trace some of the influences that have shaped his work, beginning in Cuba and spanning the globe: “La Musica en Mi.”

Lillian Manzor, director, UM’s Cuban Digital Theater Archive, associate professor and chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, College of Arts & Sciences, will discuss the roles that theater and digital culture can play in building community across the fraught borders of time, space and nations in her talk, titled “Theater and Reconciliation: The Power of the Digital Diaspora.”
